The Atlantic series is a body of artwork born on the ocean, 60 miles off-shore from Charleston SC from my friend Mark Marhefka's fishing vessel, the Amy Marie. I was lucky to have a guide in Mark who is a true steward of the sea, and who feels more at home on the water than on land.

Staying offshore without land in sight is a special experience - the ocean and the sky shifts and morphs in ways that surprised me by how vastly different they can appear from one moment to the next. Placid and calm waters turned into giant rolling waves. Huge thunderstorms poured rain, lightning, and thunder on and around us and turned the water into what looked like tall sand dunes. I was mesmerized.

It was one of those magical moments when my relative insignificance in the universe became palpable, and yet I felt endlessly expansive at the same moment. I have since referred to these moments as feeling ‘finite and infinite’ simultaneously. It captured my attention to the exclusion of all other thoughts of the past or the future - I was fully immersed in the moment.

The Process

All photographs on canvas are available in Editions of 5, in standard sizes - once five are sold, regardless of size, the edition is closed. The artwork is individually produced by John in a custom state-of-the-art digital studio in a renovated barn-building on Johns Island, SC. Meticulous attention to detail in every step of the process (particularly with regards to color) is the hallmark of Johnʼs artwork.

After the artwork is color-proofed and printed on canvas, each piece is hand-coated with multiple coats of a UV protectant layer, stretched over custom designed and locally milled stretcher bars, and then framed with a canvas floater frame in dark walnut, or in painted black or white with seamless corners. The full process takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks from initial deposit to complete, depending on the current workload and exhibition schedule.
